Street Art

Urban Art 1977, Street art stencil, circa 1977

Ed’s used stencils for his street art ‘messages’ during the 70s and early 80s. He says the best time he found was dawn on Sunday mornings because the streets were empty and you could see a cop car from miles away. He says the worst time was midnight on Saturdays. Learn by doing.

Fairly close to the inception of the CVAA (Central Visual Artists Assoc), they hosted a show at the Van City Central Building, downtown. They hired a curator and called for submissions. Ed’s piece was rejected.
He spray painted this stencil on the sidewalk in front of the building. He remembers that Jeannie Kamins, who was also a CVAA member, had her piece removed from the show- possibly for obscenity. Sometimes artists like a little controversy.
